Over the years I have lost count of the number of times that I have asked a kid to read only to be met with a roll of the eyes and the killer comment, 'But reading's boring!' From this position it is almost impossible to try and use 'reading for pleasure' as a technique.
Me: 'But you'll enjoy it if you find the right book!'
Kid: 'No I won't. Reading's boring!'
All the kid has to do from here is to maintain this position. They might read a bit, but they'll say it was boring. I've upped the ante by telling them they'll enjoy this book and, in this mood, there's no chance of that happening.
Being told you'll do something and, by God, you'll enjoy it as well, just won't work. Hopefully this kid will read for pleasure at some point - but that's a distance down the line. My first job is to get this kid to see the value of reading. It'll help them succeed.
That's why I've written my book, 'Read to Succeed: How to Get Your Kids to Read'
